Horus Heresy is not bad, but the author's rotate so the quality kind of goes up and down. Keeping in mind, I consider Dan Abnett to be the absolute pinnacle of talent among the Black Library authors (The Games Workshop publishing arm). His stuff I consider merely "good". They have some other authors of his caliber, but they're all the minority. If you like Gaunt's Ghosts I highly encourage you to check out the Eisenhorn Omnibus as well. If you did like the first omnibus I highly recommend The Saint, which collects the next four books.

I thought Old Man's War was excellent and I've also ripped through the first Gaunt's Ghost omnibus. I do have the first book of the Horus Heresy and I've been planning to jump into it. From what I understand, it's a poor man's Star Wars episodes 1-3. I think it was intended to be a trilogy of sorts, but the first book sold really well, so now it's ongoing. I actually started reading this pulp after the first of the year. I've got a huge section of it on my <a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/579312?shelf=pulp-sci-fi" rel="nofollow">Goodreads account</a>. There are many more, I've just not added them yet. Haha.
